Role Summary
The Design Manager for the Construction & Deployment team will lead the planning, design, and documentation of data centre and critical infrastructure projects. This role ensures that designs meet business requirements, industry standards, and project timelines while closely collaborating with construction, deployment, and operations teams. The Design Manager will act as the bridge between conceptual design, detailed engineering, and implementation on site.
Key Responsibilities
Design Leadership & Management
- Lead the design process for data centre and infrastructure projects, including structure, civil, power, cooling, networking, cabling, life safety and security systems.
- Oversee the development of design documentation, drawings, and technical specifications.
- Ensure compliance with local and national building codes, industry standards, and internal design guidelines.
- Coordinate with external consultants, vendors, and contractors on design deliverables.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Work closely with Construction and Deployment teams to ensure designs are buildable, practical, and aligned with project timelines.
- Collaborate with Operations teams to ensure designs meet operational, maintainability, and reliability requirements.
- Keep up to date with latest and upcoming compute systems and hardware via the Technology Team.
- Provide technical input for procurement, vendor selection, and contract evaluation related to design.
Project Oversight & Quality Assurance
- Review and approve design submissions from internal teams and external partners.
- Conduct design risk assessments and value engineering exercises to optimize cost, performance, and efficiency.
- Ensure that design changes are properly documented, communicated, and approved.
Team Development & Reporting
- Mentor and guide junior design engineers and coordinators.
- Provide regular progress reports to Head of Construction & Deployment.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives in design workflows, tools, and standards.
Skills & Experience
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical, Mechanical, or Civil Engineering (or related discipline).
- 8+ years of relevant experience in data centre or critical infrastructure design, with at least 3 years in a management role.
- Demonstrated experience in design oversight, project delivery, and multi-disciplinary coordination.
- Knowledge of AI data centre compute and networking technology is highly desirable.
