About the Role
Firmus Technologies is seeking a Mechanical Project Engineer with project engineering experience in the mechanical design, delivery and commissioning to join our Engineering and Technology team. The successful candidate will be involved from late-stage design, through site construction, commissioning and handover into operations of Firmus’ state-of-the-art sustainable AI Factory developments.
You will act as the owner’s engineer onsite, ensuring the mechanical aspects of our AI Factory builds are delivered safely, on time, to budget and in accordance with our design, standards and project objectives.
Key Responsibilities
- Design management for detailed mechanical designs delivered by contractors, ensuring alignment with Firmus standards and project requirements.
- Carry out engineering design and calculations to provide technical guidance and direction to contractors.
- Review contractor mechanical drawings, documentation and equipment selections against contractual obligations, industry standards, safety compliance, and best practice.
- Assist with the management of project documentation, including RFIs, variation requests, change control records, and site instructions for mechanical works.
- Attending site and progress meetings to assist as the Subject Matter Expert (SME) in the mechanical subject area
- Conduct regular site inspections to verify that the installations are in line with approved drawings, specifications and quality requirements.
- Track progress against milestones for mechanical scope, identify deviations, and recommend recovery or mitigation actions.
- Prepares ITPs and checklists that accurately tests equipment and plant to confirm they meets the contractual and performance requirements.
- Review ITPs and test documentation prepared by contractors for mechanical scopes of work, providing feedback and approvals where appropriate.
- Participate in QA inspections (incl. factory acceptance tests), commissioning of mechanical systems and Integrated Systems Testing to ensure plant, equipment and systems meet contract requirements and are tuned for optimum performance.
- Provide on‑the‑ground oversight of mechanical contractor commissioning activities, ensuring tests are executed as per approved procedures, issues are captured and resolved, and systems are validated prior to handover.
- Contribute to the creation of Operation and Maintenance manuals that shall include all maintenance requirements of systems and equipment.
SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
- Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering.
- 3+ years of project engineer experience in mechanical contracting, design or construction. Experience in data centre or other critical environment projects will be highly regarded.
- Strong understanding of mechanical design principles, methodologies, and relevant Australian standards, with the ability to interpret drawings and technical documentation.
- Demonstrated analytical problem-solving skills with the ability to work with ambiguous problems and develop effective and innovative technical solutions.
- Detail-oriented approach to work to ensure accuracy in design and testing and strong clear documentation.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to articulate ideas and convey technical information to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Demonstrated experience of working in a cross-functional multi-cultural teams and collaborating effectively with contractors, vendors and internal stakeholders.
- Excellent organisation and time‑management skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast‑paced project environment.
- Strong willingness to learn and proactively contribute to team and organisational goals.
- Flexibility to adapt to evolving project requirements and priorities, with an eagerness to take on new responsibilities and learn on the job.
- Proficiency in using computer-aided design (CAD) software to draft mechanical schematics is also desirable
