ROLE SUMMARY
The Field Service Technician (FST) is a hands-on role responsible for supporting the deployment, operation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of Firmus infrastructure and data centre systems. The FST plays a critical role in ensuring the availability, reliability, and performance of customer environments while maintaining the highest standards of safety, quality, and operational excellence.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Perform routine inspections, preventive maintenance, installations, and repairs of mechanical, electrical, computing, networking, and ancillary systems associated with Firmus data centre deployments.
- Ensure optimal functionality, reliability, and longevity of equipment through adherence to maintenance schedules and best practices.
- Conduct daily, weekly, monthly, and ad-hoc maintenance activities as required.
- Diagnose and resolve hardware, electrical, mechanical, networking, and infrastructure issues.
- Perform initial on-site fault response activities under approved procedures.
- Conduct fault-finding and remediation activities on compute, storage, network, and supporting infrastructure.
- Perform functional testing and validation following maintenance, repairs, or hardware replacement activities to ensure systems are ready for service.
- Escalate complex technical issues appropriately while providing accurate troubleshooting information.
- Support the deployment, installation, commissioning, and decommissioning of compute, storage, network, and immersion cooling infrastructure.
- Perform rack and stack activities, server deployment, hardware upgrades, component replacement, and break-fix maintenance.
- Install, label, test, and maintain fibre optic and structured cabling infrastructure.
- Support project delivery, maintenance activities, customer requests, and infrastructure expansion projects across Firmus data centre sites.
- Remove faulty servers or components from production environments and perform repairs where appropriate.
- Assist with asset movements, equipment deliveries, inventory transfers, and warehouse coordination.
- Perform site housekeeping activities, including maintaining work areas, waste management, and general upkeep of Firmus operational spaces.
- Escort customers, visitors, vendors, and contractors on site and support permit-to-work processes where required.
- Participate in scheduled maintenance activities and planned shutdowns.
- Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities, service calls, repairs, inspections, and operational tasks.
- Ensure all work performed is properly documented and reported within required systems and processes.
- Assist in preparing maintenance reports, incident records, and operational documentation.
- Comply with all workplace health, safety, environmental, and operational procedures.
- Conduct safety inspections and ensure site safety equipment, PPE, first aid kits, and emergency response resources remain compliant and available.
- Participate in safety briefings, audits, drills, and training activities.
- Maintain inventory records for spare parts, tools, consumables, and operational equipment.
- Assist with stock control, receiving, storage, and auditing of equipment and materials.
- Provide professional and timely support to customers, project teams, operations teams, vendors, and internal stakeholders.
- Maintain current knowledge of Firmus technologies, products, and industry best practices.
- Participate in training programs and knowledge-sharing activities.
- Support the onboarding and development of new team members where required.
- Participate in a 24x7 on-call roster and respond to incidents when required.
- Travel between Firmus sites and customer locations as necessary to support operational requirements.
- Be available to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and public holidays when required.
SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
- Diploma, NITEC, Higher NITEC, Technical Certification, Trade Qualification, or equivalent experience in Electrical, Mechanical, Electronics, IT, Computer Engineering, or related discipline.
- Minimum 5 years of relevant experience in data centre operations, critical infrastructure, field service, technical operations, or a similar environment.
- Experience working within mission-critical environments where safety, reliability, and operational discipline are essential.
- Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot and resolve technical issues across mechanical, electrical, IT, or infrastructure systems.
- Strong problem-solving, analytical, and organisational skills with a proactive and hands-on approach to work.
- Ability to work independently while contributing effectively within a multidisciplinary team environment.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to communicate effectively with customers, contractors, vendors, and internal stakeholders.
- Ability to prioritise multiple tasks and perform effectively in a fast-paced operational environment.
- Commitment to workplace health, safety, and compliance requirements.
- Experience with data centre infrastructure, GPU environments, HPC platforms, cloud infrastructure, or immersion cooling technologies will be highly regarded.
- Familiarity with operational processes such as permit-to-work systems, change management, incident response, and operational risk management is advantageous.
- Electrical license, trade certifications, or other relevant industry certifications will be advantageous.
- Willingness to participate in a 24x7 on-call roster and work flexible hours when required.
- Ability to travel between Firmus sites and customer locations as operationally required.
