The Role of AI in Shaping the Future: Insights from Davos 2024

The World Economic Forum's Annual Meeting in Davos 2024 centred on a pivotal theme: "Artificial Intelligence as a Driving Force for the Economy and Society." More than two dozen sessions at the event are focused directly on AI by the New York Times DealBook's count, discussing everything from AI in education to AI ethics and AI regulation. There's even a session about AI's "hard power" in geopolitics. This underscores the profound impact AI is set to have on various facets of our lives.
Half a decade ago, when mainstream adoption of AI was still in its infancy, Sustainable Metal Cloud (SMC) began prototyping the future of AI cloud infrastructure. Anticipating the exponential growth and potential of AI, SMC invested in developing robust, sustainable, and high-performance computing environments.
"When we think about the future of artificial intelligence, we're at a phase where in 2024 we think generative AI will move from pilots and experiments to implementation and industrialization," states Paul Knopp, the U.S. CEO of KPMG. His words, spoken at the World Economic Forum's Annual Meeting in Davos, resonate with the current trajectory of AI's evolution. This sentiment reflects a crucial shift in AI's journey from a nascent technology to a driving force in the global economy and society.
AI's Economic and Societal Impact
The International Monetary Fund (IMF)'s latest report, "Gen-AI: Artificial Intelligence and the Future of Work," revealed that nearly 40% of global employment is exposed to AI, with the figure rising to 60% in advanced economies. This shift brings both challenges and opportunities, especially in terms of productivity gains, growth, and wages. Notably, college-educated individuals and women are likely to benefit more from AI advancements.
There are many unknowns - Regulation and Governance
Countries are actively exploring AI regulations, with the European Union making significant strides in drafting AI rules. Singapore, in parallel, has also commenced to explore the AI regulatory framework with the National AI Strategy 2.0. These efforts are crucial in managing AI's broad impact while ensuring ethical considerations and global standards are met.
Summarizing the many AI-led discussions at Davos, several key themes emerge:
- Generative AI: Discussions at Davos highlighted the potential of generative AI to revolutionize industries like healthcare and finance, with a focus on managing risks and maximizing productivity gains.
- Finnovation: Business leaders delved into AI's role in financial technology, debating how to balance its benefits and risks.
- Generative Models: Advances in generative AI, including Large Language Models (LLMs), were discussed, highlighting their potential to solve complex problems in health, agriculture, and climate change.
- AI as an Equalizer: The need for equitable access to AI technology was a significant point of discussion, emphasizing the importance of digital literacy and the affordability of devices, especially in the Global South.
SMC: Empowering the AI Revolution
